Australian plan to cap international student numbers from 2025 criticised
Australian universities and businesses are lobbying against legislation to cap international student numbers from next year. It’s a billion-dollar industry at the centre of a political migration debate
The legislation has been described as ‘rushed policy’ and ‘a political smokescreen’. But the government says changes are necessary to prevent people using student visas as a backdoor into Australia.
The government says it has introduced the bill to amend the integrity of education services including weeding out unscrupulous operators and seeking to address issues that came to light through recent reviews into visa exploitation and the migration system.
The Department of Home Affaris says the exploitation can range from providing poor quality eduation products to high student fees and false promises of pathways to permanent migration.
